Tuesday night. We started to get a storm rolling in, it was still a distance away so we kept knocking doors but as it got closer we realized it was a bad idea, we went to call someone but we couldn’t find the phone… It was the worst time to lose the phone haha.
We ended up going home to look there and while we were driving the storm hit, wind, rain, HAIL, it was crazy! Lighting everywhere I felt like I was in a movie! We ended up finding the phone and watching the storm for a bit then decided to go back out when it died down to finish the night knocking doors.
The first door a lady freaked out and we think called the cops, she watched us knock on her neighbors door and had a phone in her hand. We just kept going, if the cops show up then we will talk to them. It wouldn’t be the first time haha.
That neighborhood wasn’t successful, it was 8:45pm people weren’t happy cause it was late. So we went to leave and as we were walking we saw two cops leaving a house down the street and they were hustling.. I thought oh crap she really did call the cops but then they got in their car so I went to do the same.
Well a few seconds later these two police cars come flying around the corner and come into the same parking lot as us and pulled a U-turn. I thought they were gonna stop behind us so we couldn’t leave then pull guns on us but sadly they kept driving very quickly.
A little freaked out I was just gonna get in the car but as I was getting in the car Elder Sanders calls my name so I get out and he points to the sky. There is this funnel cloud slowly drifting to the ground…. Yeah it’s a freaking tornado cloud!
We were in the middle of a random church parking lot with no other cars, as were watching this cloud drift down we see a huge flash of green light and all the sudden the power to the houses go out, the transformer blew… And following the power going out a huge gust of wind comes in and pushes us back, the door to the car flew open. This thing was about to touch down right in front of us!!!!
I yelled at Elder Sanders to get in the car but he’s yelling back at me telling me that’s the worst thing we can do in a tornado and that we need to run to the nearest building. Well the nearest building to run to was a church because the people in the houses hated us cause we just knocked them so that was out of the picture.
So I told him to just get in the car so we can beat it before it touched down. We ended up getting in and driving off. It never touched down but the rest of the night we had crazy lightning and rain, that’s the closest I’ve been to a tornado though and it was a rush!
Probably the biggest thing I’ve taken away from this past week is a greater understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. We were constantly knocking doors this week trying to find those who were ready to accept the gospel, but instead of finding people we found ourselves facing the most rejection I’ve had on my mission so far.
We ran into more atheists than I knew existed and had more people yell at us, slam the door on us, bash with us, than any other week or day. We even had a kid spit at us, which was a first for me.
The whole week we couldn’t figure out what was going on, it’s never been like this. Wednesday was particularly hard we had gone to 5 different neighborhoods thinking it was just one neighborhood that wasn’t accepting but that was proven wrong by 4 others that we tried.
Everywhere we went no one wanted to give us more than 30 seconds. By the end of the day I was reminded of the purpose for this rejection and hard times. I remembered why Jesus Christ had suffered and what he faced.
I thought about the garden of Gethsemane when he fell on his face and pleaded with the Lord to remove his bitter cup but was promptly reminded that it wasn’t about him, it was about God’s will and those Christ served.
And really that’s what it comes down to by the end of the day, are we willing to give up ourselves to serve those around us. Often times I find myself pleading to have my own bitter cup or trials, taken from me but it’s not about me, it’s about the Lords plan and what He wants me to learn.
Throughout this whole week I’ve seen that in order to fully understand his atonement we need to experience at least a little of what Christ did. I am truly grateful for His eternal sacrifice and the love He has for each and everyone of us.
I know he lives, I know with full purpose in heart that the power of his atonement can carry us through everything and because Christ suffered for us and was hung on the cross for us that we all have the opportunity to be forgiven of all of our sins and live with our Heavenly Father again.
I love being able to see his atonement change the lives of all those who are willing to accept his gospel and I pray for those who aren’t ready yet to one day have a change of heart and be able to see the blessings God has for each of us.
I love this gospel and I love being able to share it, and I leave this testimony with you in the name of our savior, Jesus Christ, amen.
I hope y’all have a wonderful week and search for Gods hand in your lives each day!
