Growing Pains

In the spirit of Mother’s Day being yesterday I thought I would share a story about my mother this week 😊

When I was younger I would wake up in the middle of the night sometimes crying because of the pain I was in. My mom would come in my room to see if I was okay. After a few minutes of talking she quietly walked back into her room and grabbed a rice pack then we would walk downstairs to the kitchen.

As she put the rice pack in the microwave she turned on the microwave light and set me on the kitchen counter and we talked. She comforted me and told me everything would be okay and that I was just growing. Her comforting words made me feel better, but she also taught me a very important lesson.

Growth in life comes through those pains and hard things but we are never alone. Throughout my mission I’ve faced several of those growing pains, times when I struggled, times where I felt lost or abandoned, or inadequate, but just as my mother comforted me the Savior was there to pick me up and have a little talk with me.

Christ is our comforter, He knows what it’s like to be in pain and to suffer what we may be suffering, but He’s there to help us and assure us that we will be okay.

Growing pains are necessary for us in life because it helps us to grow taller and stronger. As we face spiritual growing pains, or trials, we see our character change and we see that over time we are able to spiritually grow taller and stronger as we rely on our Savior.

The sacrifice of Jesus Christ is like our spiritual rice pack, it’s there to ease the pain, to lift our burdens, and to comfort us. We have been given the wonderful blessing of having a Savior to come to our side when we hurt and to truly love and understand us.

My mom was able to know what pain I was in because she at one point had felt those similar growing pains. And just how my mom knew what I was going through, our Savior knows what we are going through or have gone through because He’s been there.

I want everyone to know that even though life can be tough and there are times we are tried and tested to our very last ounce, or we feel as though we are drowning and can’t stay afloat, or we have fallen and we can’t get up, there is always a way when we rely on the divine help of Jesus Christ.

I hope every had a wonderful Mother’s Day. I know for me I am truly blessed to have the wonderful mother I do in my life and I am grateful I was able to see her and the rest of my family yesterday.

I hope y’all have a great week, and stay cool 😎

Love,

  1. Elders Summers,
What a beautiful analogy and tribute to your wonderful mother. We do experience a similar Christlike love as we see the sacrifices made and the comforts given from our mothers.
When I was 17, I had an ACL knee reconstruction. The recovery was long and painful at times and she would always offer to rub my knee, the only thing that relieved the pain. I wish we had had a warm rice pack! Anyway, while rbbing my knee, she would talk with and comfort me just as your mom did with you.
My mom is gone now. She died recently and your letter brought back memories of her constant, unconditional and comforting love.
Thank you for that reminder and also the remainder that the Savior is there for all of us as, to strengthen and comfort us as we experience life’s growing pains.

You are so amazing and I am so proud of the man you are becoming.
Take care and keep up the great work!
    Much love,
    Sister Barrett
